Pattern Image Bank

This image links to patterns because it shows an irregular pattern. The same thing is being repeated over and over again but not in the same shape or size. I can incorporate this in my work because I can take pictures of pavements or walls that contain shapes that are not all the same but still create a pattern. I like this image because although it is very simple and doesn't really have a meaning the cracks make the picture come to live because without the cracks the picture would be boring.

This image links to regular pattern because it shows a regular pattern as the houses that are repeated are the same. I like this image because it makes us think about things that we wouldn't normally look at as being patterns. I can use this idea in my work because it shows that anything can make a pattern even if at first glimpse we don't notice it. Also, I like the fact that this image is black and white as it adds more effect to the pattern because the houses are seen to be more bolder and stand out more.

This image is linked to pattern because it shows a regular pattern of the same thing being repeated over and over again. I like that this pattern had been created rather than found. The idea from this image can be used in my work because I can try and make patterns with objects. I like how this image is plain and simple but still has meaning of pattern.

This image is linked to pattern because its shows an irregular pattern as the same thing is being repeated over again but in different shapes and sizes. I like this image because at first glimpse you wouldn't take into consideration that it is representing a pattern. I can use this idea in my work because I can find walls with different sized bricks that make up the wall.

This image is linked to pattern because it shows an irregular pattern with the same thing being repeated over again but in different colours. I like this image because it is abstract as when you first look at it you are not sure what is being repeated. I can use this idea in my work because I can go close up onto the images to make them seem abstract.

Texture Image Bank

This image links to texture because the angle that the photographer has taken the image at enables us to see the surface of the wall. We can tell that this wall would be rough rather than smooth because it has cracks missing in the bricks and it looks old and uneven. The focus of the image also helps us able to see the walls texture because we focus on one section of the wall rather than trying to look at the whole thing. I can use this type of photography in my work because I can take the idea of photographing old walls that are rough or newer walls that are smooth.

This image links to texture because the photographer has zoomed in on part of the snakes skin which allows us to be able to tell that the snakes skin is slimy. Also, the reflection of the light onto the snakes skin makes it glisten which also helps us identify that the snakes skin is slimy. We are able to tell that the skin is smooth because there are no sections in the image that prove the skin to be rough. I can use this type of photography in my work because I can use animals in my images to focus on the different types of skin or fur.

This image links to texture because the photographer has focused in on the tree trunk so we are able to see the cracks in the tree. We are able to identify that the tree trunk will feel rough because of the cracks and the fact that the tree is uneven. Although the image has been taken straight on we can still tell that parts of the trunk still stick out and are rough. I can use this type of photography in my work because I can take pictures of things close up instead of the whole thing.

This image links to texture because the photographer has focused in on the animal so we are able to see the fur in better detail. We are able to tell that this animal has fur because we can almost see the individual hairs if we look closely. We can also identify that the fur will be soft because the way the light reflects onto the animal the fur doesn't look rough or hard. I can use this in my photography because I can focus the camera on an animals fur rather than the whole animal.

This image links to texture because the photographer has used lighting to focus on the pasta so that we can tell that the pasta is hard. We can tell that the pasta is hard because if it was cooked and soft they would have a larger surface area. The pasta looks hard and rough because of the edges it has. The lighting helps show the texture well because the brighter the lighting the more we can see. I can use this in my photography because I can get pictures of different types of food with different textures.

Pattern Definition

Pattern is an underlying structure that organizes surfaces or structures in a consistent, regular manner.
Pattern can be described as a repeating unit of shape or form, but it can also be thought of as the "skeleton" that
organises the parts of a composition.

Patterns are simply repeated shapes, colours or objects, ordered in either regular or irregular formations. As a
photographer, using pattern is key to good composition and, when used effectively, can transform an otherwise
bland image into something dramatic and eye catching. Patterns are formulated all around us - in both natural
and man made settings.

This image related to pattern because it shows us a continuous shape being produced throughout the
picture. The photographer has used different elements of light such as dark and light throughout the
picture to create a better effect. Although there are different elements of light the pater is still being
clearly seen.

Regular Patterns
Some of the most rewarding patterns to shoot consist of shapes, lines or colours that repeat in a strict formation.
Filling a frame with clear-cut lines or a consistent geometric formation.

This image relates to regular patterns because the cars are all repeated in the same pattern. This image
is also abstract because although we can tell it is cars from a birds eye view we can also maybe
interpret it as something else.

Irregular Patterns
There is often the presumption that a pattern has to involve straight lines to produce something recognisable as a
pattern, but this is not the case.
In the natural world, patterns can be found in irregular formations and, in direct contrast to regular formations.

This image represents a irregular pattern because it is not the same shape, line or colour being repeated over
again. This is from the natural world and this links to irregular patterns because the natural world doesn't always
consist of regular patterns it mainly consists of irregular patterns.

Texture Definition

The challenge of seeing and capturing texture is mostly based on one element - light.

Texture can be accentuated by the side light of early sunny mornings or early evenings, or by overhead light
when the sun is vertical and high in the sky. Hard light can be achieved when shadows are present on the
object and spot light can be achieved when no shadows are present.

This image relates to texture because the image is bright and we can see the marks in the wood. By looking at this image we can tell that the texture of the tree is rough because of the cracks, of there was less cracks in the wood we would interpret this as being smooth.

The photographer Patrice de Villiers has captured the texture in this image by using the light because the image is bright and we can see the spikes of the fruit also the texture inside of it. She has captured texture very well as we can see all the details of the fruit. By looking at this image we can tell that the outside of the fruit is sharp or rough, from the inside of the fruit we can tell that it is smooth.

This image relates to texture because we can see the detail of this leaf, although there are lines in the leaves that could be seen as rough the photographer has taken the image at an angle where we see the lines as smooth. By focusing on a section of the image we are instantly drawn to it and the different elements of light. The photographer had used darker light on the unfocused parts but lighter light on the more focused parts to make the texture more visible.

This image relates to texture because of the detail of the surface we can see. By looking at this image we can tell that the surface is going to be rough because the lines on the surfaces are coming out. The image is bright which helps us focus on the texture and we are able to establish how this would feel.

Colour Work Diary

Evaluation
The focus of my photographs was colour, I tried to take pictures using muted colours, analogous colours and complementary colours. In my images I was trying to incorporate one of these types of colours in my work. Personally, I think the majority of my photographs have followed the focus of the topic well but some have not turned out the way that I would've liked them to. Some ideas that I had didn't work as well as other ideas that I had.
This image I have taken worked particularly well because complementary colours as the green in the background helps the red/pink stand out in the foreground. The focus of the picture is also good as the flower is mainly in focus unlike the background which is not in focus on purpose. I think is one of my best images as the focus is good and complementary colours have been used so it links to the main topic well.

This image I have taken has also worked particularly well because I was able to incorporate muted colours as well as analogous colours. The blue sky makes the muted colours come to life because it makes them stand out. The focus of the image is also good because although it is zoomed in the focus has come out well. Also, this image can be seen as abstract because it is unsure when you first look at it that it is a sky and this can be perceived as something else to other people. I think this is one of my best images because it links to the main topic well.

This image I have taken is an example of images that are not linked to the topic well and are not very good photos. This image doesn't link to any of the colours such as muted, analogous or complimentary as there is really only one main focus colour of the image whereas in some of my other images more than one main colour is achieved in the picture. Also, the focus of this image is not the best because it looks slightly out of focus. I think this is one of my worst pictures as it doesn't really relate to the main topic as such.

Progression
To progress the images that I have taken I used Photoshop to improve the images I have taken.

To edit this image I have increased the contrast of the colour of the flower and made the entire background black and white. This is linked to muted colours as the colours in the background have been completely taken away to create the main focus of the image clear. To improve this image further I could have taken more than one of these flowers and used them in the image to create a bigger effect of saturated colours and muted colours.

To edit this image I have made the wall black and white and increased the contrast of the sky. This is linked to muted colours as I have made the colours of the wall further muted to add a greater effect to the sky. Also, this could link to saturated colours as I have made the blue brighter and bolder. To improve this image I could have included more in the shot such as a larger sky and wall surface area and maybe increase the saturation of the wall instead of the sky.

To edit this photo I made the background black and white and increased the saturation of the colours of the flowers. This can link to muted colours as there are no existent colours in the background. Also, it can link to saturated colours because I have made the colours of the flowers bolder and brighter. To improve this photo I could've made more of the other flowers in shot and took the photo at an angle where the sun wasn't reflecting in the image as much.

To edit this photo I made everything in the picture black and white except the blue sections of the bench and I increased the saturation of the blue. This can link to muted colours because I have made every colour other than blue non-existent. To improve this photo I could've taken the picture at a different angle to create and abstract effect.

To edit this photo made the outside of the colours black and white and increased the saturation of the colours. This links to muted colours because there are no other colours in the image apart from the square sections. This can also link to saturated colours because the colours have been saturated to look brighter and bolder. To improve this image I could've made the image more zoomed out to show the other painted sections.

Next time I am able to take picture regarding this topic I will use these improvements in my work.

Colour Straight Images

I took this image of a flower because the colour of the flower stands out from the green behind it. This is an example of complimentary colours as the green of the leaves makes the colour of the flower stand out more. The colour green relates to restfulness and the fact that the green is in the background and isn't the main focus helps the red/pink of the colour stand out more. The image almost suggests to us that the background of the photo is quieter but the foreground of the image is louder.

I took this image because the colours of the flowers stand out from the other colours in the picture. Once again the green is in the background of the colour which suggests to us that it is quieter and the foreground of the photo is louder. The colour yellow represents joy and is upbeat, this is shown in the photo as the sun is reflecting on the yellow flowers and the rest of the photo is in darkness. This photo also links to complimentary colours because the colours make each other stand out and we can focus our eyes on each different colour.

I took this image because it represents complimentary colours because the brown of the bench makes the blue of the bench stand out more as it makes the bench seem brighter. Shades of blue are flattering and this blue can be seen as flattering because it stands out and it makes the bench almost come to life as the other parts of the bench seem dull and lifeless. The blue almost brings the photo to life because if the whole bench was brown it probably wouldn't have attracted me to take the picture.

I took this image because it represents muted colours on the wall because the colours aren't bright. This image also represents complimentary colours because the blue of the sky makes the muted wall colours stand out. I like this image because I like how the image is almost abstract as when you look at the image it isn't certain if it is a wall and a sky and the shapes on the wall are also abstract. The blue brings the picture together because it makes the image less dull and boring.

I took this image because the paint on the wall stands out against the white border. This represents complimentary colours because the white makes the red, orange and grey stand out more. I like this image because it seems simple and boring but the colour helps bring the picture to life. The fact that the colours have been painted on a white background makes the colours seem brighter than if they were painted onto a black or darker colour background.

Colour Image Bank

This image represents the colours it uses very well because it uses mainly blues. The colour blue implies distance and coolness and this picture shows this because the picture shows a landscape and makes us feel cool as it doesn't represent a hot atmosphere. These different shades of blues are almost satisfying to us because it helps represent a cool and calm atmosphere. If there was more shades of yellow/orange it would make us feel a bit warmer or more joyful.

This image represent colour very well because it mainly uses yellows and blues. It represent blues ver well as it creates a cool image. The colour blue also represents distance and the fact that this is a landscape represents the distance very well. Also, this picture uses yellows and oranges, oranges represent friendliness and warmth. This image doesn't show friendless as such but it does represent warmth, the fact that some of the image is orange it shows that the orange is taking over the blue and creating a warm atmosphere.

This photo represents colour well as only the umbrella is coloured. The other colours are isolated in the picture so the umbrella is the main focus of the picture. I like how photographers isolate the other colours in the picture because it creates a good effect. The umbrella almost represents a simpler version of the colour wheel as all these colours are somewhat near each other on the wheel, which could also show that this picture represents analogous colours.

This picture represents colour well as it uses mainly green colours. Green represents nature and peacefulness which links to this picture because we can see grass and it almost looks like nothing is going on in the picture. It also represents restfulness which we can see in this picture because the picture makes us feel calm as nothing seems to be going on in the picture.

This image represents colour well as it uses violet. Violet links to fantasy and unrealism, this is shown in this picture because it is very rare that wee see a violet sky. The fact that the violet sky is shown with a landmark makes us think that this picture is of some importance because this is a famous landmark. The different shades of violet create a good effect because this is the only colour we really see as the other parts of the image are shown to be in darkness.

Colour Definitions

Colour is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye. There are three properties to colour. The first is hue, which simply means the name we give to a colour (red, yellow, blue, green, etc.). The second property is intensity, which refers to the vividness of the colour.

This image shows the importance of colour because all the other colours have been isolated and only one colour is standing out. Colour in a picture changes our perspective of the image as we focus on the bold colours of images.

Colour and Emotion
  •             There has been a tremendous amount of research on how colour affects human beings and some of this research suggests that men and women may respond to colours differently.
  •             Colour affects us emotionally, with different colours evoking different emotions.
  •             In short, colour has the capacity to affect the human nervous system.
Psychology of Colour
  •          Orange is the color of flesh, or the friendly warmth of the hearth fire. The positive implications of this color suggest approachability, informality. The negative side might imply accessibility to the point of suggesting that anyone can approach-- a lack of discrimination or quality.

This represents the colour orange very well as orange shows friendliness and warmth, the fact that the sunset is
the main focus in this image represents warmth as we associate the sun with warmth. This picture shows
approachability because it almost shows her inviting someone into her life, she's letting the sun into her life
so she can be warm.
  •            Yellow is the color of sunshine. This color is optimistic, upbeat, modern. The energy of yellow can become overwhelming. Therefore yellow is not a color that tends to dominate fashion for long periods of time.

This represents the colour yellow very well as yellow is seen to be modern and upbeat. This is seen to
be modern because it is stairs that look like they are present in a modern house. Yellow can also be
seen as upbeat in this picture as it is not a dull picture it shows some life.
  •            Green In its positive mode, green suggests nature (plant life, forests), life, stability, restfulness, naturalness. On the other hand, green in some tones or certain contexts (such as green skin) might instead suggest decay (fungus, mould , toxicity, artificiality.

This represents the colour green very well as green represents nature, life and restfulness. This represents nature and restfulness because it shows a peaceful landscape. The face that the sea is also calm represents restfulness. Also, the clouds and the sea are also shown to be a shade of green which also links to nature.
  •            Blue suggests coolness, distance, spirituality, or perhaps reserved elegance. Some shade of blue is flattering to almost anyone. In its negative mode, we can think of the "blues"-the implication being one of sadness, passivity, alienation, or depression.

This image represents the colour blue very well because it shows coolness, distance, spirituality and elegance. The fact that this is a road and it is unlearn of where it ends represents distance. Also, the picture seems to be cold because the shade of blue makes you feel cold and almost imitates winter.
  •          Violet is the color of fantasy, playfulness, impulsiveness, and dream states. In its negative mode, it can suggest nightmares, or madness.

This photo represents the colour violet very well because it represents fantasy and almost unrealistic. This can also be linked to the negative side because it is almost nightmarish and the sky is only lit up everything else is darkness. Also, the fact that the sky is violet is unrealistic because we rarely see the sky this colour.

This picture represents the emotion sadness and makes us feel sad emotions because of the shade of
blue that is represented in the image. I think the photographer has taken the picture in this way
because they wanted to represent sadness or dullness. The fact that this is Lily Allen and she sings
slow songs can also be shown in this picture, the way the photographer has taken this picture could
link to her music.

This picture represents happy emotions and makes us feel happy or excited. The bright and vibrant
colours represented in this image makes us feel cheerful. I think the photographer has taken the
picture in this way because they want to show the people in the picture having a fun time and the use
of bright colours helps them achieve this message. The fact that this is Britney Spears and she sings
happy upbeat songs shows us that the message of the picture links to the type of music she makes.

Muted Colours
When you take a colour tone, and you mix it with white or grey, it dulls it down to make the
colour less. bright or in other words it makes it muted or mute.

Saturated Colours
In technical terms, it is the expression of the bandwidth of light from a source. The term hue
refers to the colour of the image itself, while saturation describes the intensity (purity) of that
hue. When colour is fully saturated, the colour is considered in purest (truest) version.

Analagous Colours
Analogous colors are groups of three colours that are next to each other on the colour
wheel, with one being the dominant colour, which tends to be a primary or secondary
colour, and a tertiary.
This picture represents analagous colours well because all these colours are next to each other on the colour
wheel and they compliment each other very well. By having analogous colours next to each other they are similar
colours but one is a dominant colour.

Complimentary Colours
Complementary colours are colours that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel that make each other
stand out when next to each other.
This represents complementary colours because red and green are opposite each other on the colour wheel and
when they are in a picture together they make the other one stand out more. So in this picture the red stands out more against the green.
