Colour Definitions

Colour is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye. There are three properties to colour. The first is hue, which simply means the name we give to a colour (red, yellow, blue, green, etc.). The second property is intensity, which refers to the vividness of the colour.

This image shows the importance of colour because all the other colours have been isolated and only one colour is standing out. Colour in a picture changes our perspective of the image as we focus on the bold colours of images.

Colour and Emotion
  •             There has been a tremendous amount of research on how colour affects human beings and some of this research suggests that men and women may respond to colours differently.
  •             Colour affects us emotionally, with different colours evoking different emotions.
  •             In short, colour has the capacity to affect the human nervous system.
Psychology of Colour
  •          Orange is the color of flesh, or the friendly warmth of the hearth fire. The positive implications of this color suggest approachability, informality. The negative side might imply accessibility to the point of suggesting that anyone can approach-- a lack of discrimination or quality.

This represents the colour orange very well as orange shows friendliness and warmth, the fact that the sunset is
the main focus in this image represents warmth as we associate the sun with warmth. This picture shows
approachability because it almost shows her inviting someone into her life, she's letting the sun into her life
so she can be warm.
  •            Yellow is the color of sunshine. This color is optimistic, upbeat, modern. The energy of yellow can become overwhelming. Therefore yellow is not a color that tends to dominate fashion for long periods of time.

This represents the colour yellow very well as yellow is seen to be modern and upbeat. This is seen to
be modern because it is stairs that look like they are present in a modern house. Yellow can also be
seen as upbeat in this picture as it is not a dull picture it shows some life.
  •            Green In its positive mode, green suggests nature (plant life, forests), life, stability, restfulness, naturalness. On the other hand, green in some tones or certain contexts (such as green skin) might instead suggest decay (fungus, mould , toxicity, artificiality.

This represents the colour green very well as green represents nature, life and restfulness. This represents nature and restfulness because it shows a peaceful landscape. The face that the sea is also calm represents restfulness. Also, the clouds and the sea are also shown to be a shade of green which also links to nature.
  •            Blue suggests coolness, distance, spirituality, or perhaps reserved elegance. Some shade of blue is flattering to almost anyone. In its negative mode, we can think of the "blues"-the implication being one of sadness, passivity, alienation, or depression.

This image represents the colour blue very well because it shows coolness, distance, spirituality and elegance. The fact that this is a road and it is unlearn of where it ends represents distance. Also, the picture seems to be cold because the shade of blue makes you feel cold and almost imitates winter.
  •          Violet is the color of fantasy, playfulness, impulsiveness, and dream states. In its negative mode, it can suggest nightmares, or madness.

This photo represents the colour violet very well because it represents fantasy and almost unrealistic. This can also be linked to the negative side because it is almost nightmarish and the sky is only lit up everything else is darkness. Also, the fact that the sky is violet is unrealistic because we rarely see the sky this colour.

This picture represents the emotion sadness and makes us feel sad emotions because of the shade of
blue that is represented in the image. I think the photographer has taken the picture in this way
because they wanted to represent sadness or dullness. The fact that this is Lily Allen and she sings
slow songs can also be shown in this picture, the way the photographer has taken this picture could
link to her music.

This picture represents happy emotions and makes us feel happy or excited. The bright and vibrant
colours represented in this image makes us feel cheerful. I think the photographer has taken the
picture in this way because they want to show the people in the picture having a fun time and the use
of bright colours helps them achieve this message. The fact that this is Britney Spears and she sings
happy upbeat songs shows us that the message of the picture links to the type of music she makes.

Muted Colours
When you take a colour tone, and you mix it with white or grey, it dulls it down to make the
colour less. bright or in other words it makes it muted or mute.

Saturated Colours
In technical terms, it is the expression of the bandwidth of light from a source. The term hue
refers to the colour of the image itself, while saturation describes the intensity (purity) of that
hue. When colour is fully saturated, the colour is considered in purest (truest) version.

Analagous Colours
Analogous colors are groups of three colours that are next to each other on the colour
wheel, with one being the dominant colour, which tends to be a primary or secondary
colour, and a tertiary.
This picture represents analagous colours well because all these colours are next to each other on the colour
wheel and they compliment each other very well. By having analogous colours next to each other they are similar
colours but one is a dominant colour.

Complimentary Colours
Complementary colours are colours that are opposite to each other on the colour wheel that make each other
stand out when next to each other.
This represents complementary colours because red and green are opposite each other on the colour wheel and
when they are in a picture together they make the other one stand out more. So in this picture the red stands out more against the green.
